Further, after Adgaon project, watershed development was the torch Mandal held in all the years with the belief that watershed has a blend of rural livelihood and community empowerment.
With this approach many projects were designed considering policies and systems operational in government and non-government sector. Indo-German Watershed Development Programme (IGWDP) through bilateral agreement of Govt of India and Govt of Germany took shape and Mandal facilitated watershed development in Jadgaon Group Watershed in 1994-98. Similarly Jadgaon Micro Watershed was supported in these days under AFPRO-EZE-CA project. It was a more improved version of Adgaon and later under IGWDP Asarkheda and Kadwanchi were included in 1996-2002.
MSSM has always been thriving for developing appropriate technologies and long‑term approaches for addressing the most pressing problems of the people in the drought‑prone region on survival and ecology. MSSM always believed that these options would have limited utility, or would, at best, remain in the confines of some academic discipline. MSSM had, therefore, actively pursued the cause of extension of these techniques and approaches. This is one of the reasons for which MSSM instituted a Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Kharpudi, Jalna.
In the field of training and extension, MSSM had been working towards awareness-generation and motivation of farmers in the region on appropriate technology for agricultural and sustainable resource management. These efforts, in the initial stages, were sporadic and limited in scale. From 1994, MSSM went into training, education and extension in an organised and systematic manner through Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Jalna. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jalna (KVKJ) was established by MSSM for promotion and extension of appropriate agricultural technology in District Jalna, training and demonstration being the key elements in the extension strategy. KVKJ has focussed on promotion and extension of, inter alia, watershed development technology, women's development, farm‑processing, non‑farm activities for income generation, to attempt sustainability of land and water systems in selected villages.
Cotton and Pigeon Pea are the major cash crops of the area. Both of these crops are prone to the damage by pests and diseases. Heavy use of insecticides is the order of the day leading to high cost of production and damaging environment. MSSM has started Integrated Pest Management Programme in the village Butkheda, District Jalna with the help of AFPRO. To control insects light traps pheromone traps use of bio degradable insecticides are being used. This is an experimental and research project.
MSSM has also started Institutional Training Centre for training rural youths. The courses consist of welding, Electrical wiring, Two wheeler mechanics. This programme is run with the support from Functional Vocational Training Forum (FVTF).
Community empowerment was where the seeds were sown and Mandal has faith in the principle of ‘that for any development to occur it has to be participatory’. Over the years Mandal has organised social gatherings, meetings, programmes, trainings, seminars, workshops and represented this segment at various platforms as formal members or as invitees. Training of representatives and functionaries of Panchayati Raj institution is also on the agenda of the organisation. Empowering women and the poor and disadvantaged section of the village communities and brining them into mainstream of village functioning, through a systematic awareness, education and skill and confidence building programmes, serves as precursor to address their practical needs in health and education sector. Poorest Area Civil Societies (PACS) a project specifically aiming at community empowerment is underway in 60 villages of Jalna and Aurangabad districts.
